Default Simple slowcooker beef stew recipe

Does anyone have a fairly simple, but tasty, slow cooker beef stew
recipe. Ideally it will be plain and old fashioned, but very tasty. I
have a 6.5 litre slow cooker. I have been on Google but did not fancy
what I saw. I live in Solihull UK and McCormicks Beef Stew Seasoning
Mix do not appear to have reached here.

Thanks,
Emrys Davies.

Slow cooker beef stew is one of my standbys. And it sounds like yours
is about the same size as mine.

I don't have exact measurements for all the items, but I'll do my best

2lb (or more) beef stew meat
1-2lb carrots
1-2lb potatoes
1 turnip / rutabaga
1-2 onions
4-5 14oz cans beef broth

chop up the veggies and dump it all in the slow cooker. Put it on low
and walk away for 10 hours.
Make a slurry of 2-3Tbs cornstarch and some liquid (water or tomato
juice) and mix that in. Voila.

I actually prefer pork stew meat to beef. You can use pork butt or
boneless country pork ribs for the meat.

I will also often throw in a 1lb bag of frozen corn, and a bag of
frozen green beans. Sometimes a pound of sliced mushrooms. It depends
on what I'm in the mood for, and what I remembered / forgot at the
store.

If you are feeling extra motivated, coat the meat with flour and brown
it first.

This one is easy, with tasty results:

Beef in Onion Gravy

2 cans cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1/4 cup dry onion soup mix
1/4 cup beef stock/broth
2 Tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca

2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into small cubes

cooked noodles or mashed potatoes

In a slow cooker, combine first four ingredients. Let stand for 15 minutes.
Stir in beef. Cover and cook on low setting for 6-8 hours, or until tender.
Serve over noodles/potatoes.
6-8 servings

Funny you should mention, but I have a crockpot in the refrigerator
all ready to fire up in the morning before I go to work. It's The
Ranger's recipe and it really is good (thank you, Ranger!). Simple and
tasty. I am hoping The Ranger doesn't mind me reprinting it he

Beef Stew

soups and stews

2 lb. beef; cubed
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. pepper
1 tbs. olive oil
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1 tsp. worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic, minced
2 bay leaves
1 tsp. sweet paprika
4 lg. carrots, chopped; sliced
8 baby new potatoes; halved
1 sm. white onion; sliced into wedges
1 stalk celery; diced
1 cup brown gravy
1/4 cup Butter
1/4 cup flour
2 cups boiling water

Mix flour, pepper, paprika, salt into Ziploc(tm) bag. Dredge meat,
patting extra flour mixture off cubes. In a skillet, heat oil over
medium-high heat; add garlic into skillet to start carmelization, set
dredged meat cubes into pan after 3-4 minutes and brown. Beware
burning the garlic.

In crockpot, layer vegetables (potatoes, carrots, onion, celery).
Add broth. Start crockpot to cooking level desired (low or high) while
browning meat and preparing gravy.

When meat has browned completely, remove skillet from heat and add
meat into crockpot. Return skillet to heat, add butter to drippings.
Add flour and stir in until roux the appropriate shade of brown. Add
water and reduce. Pour over mix in crockpot when done. Low heat should
cook 9-11 hours; high heat should cook 4-6 hours. Serve with fresh
cornbread, hot sour dough or sweet French bread.

Yield: serves 6.
