It's a very fun and touching read. The same authors have a new book
out devoted to weddings. I need to read it soon.

I am three quarters of the way thru it. Having grown up in the rural south,
I KNOW these people.

Bing Cherry Salad w/Co-Cola (suth'rn pronunciation)

2 3 oz. boxes of cherry Jello
1 #2 can (20 oz) can of crushed pineapple, drained, reserve juice
1 # 303 can (15 oz.) can of black cherries, drained, reserve juice
2 cups of reserved pineapple and cherry juices, heated
16 oz. Coca-cola
1 cup pecans

Dissolve the jello in the hot juice, then add the Co-cola and pour into a
dish (preferably a casserole). Chill. When jello starts to congeal, stir
in the pineapple, quartered cherries and pecans. Chill until firm.

LOL! I had a couple of friends from the deep south when I was in
college and that's exactly the way they said it.

<recipe snipped>

Have you ever eaten it? Is it good? I love cherries, but like
basting ham with Coca Cola.... it'll take me a while to get used to
the thought.

And ALL soft drinks are "a coke" then they ask you which kind. We say
neither pop or soda. My children have still to get used to their friends
asking for a soda. It's okay guys I know we will end up back in the
mountains before you die. =-)

The salad isn't horrible, but it is a jello salad so...... Now Co-Cola Cake
is delicious every time.

This recipe has the distinction of being the only jello salad that has
ever even slightly appealed to me. Without the pecans that is
<shuddering>

<snip>

You're a Central Calif gal, aren't you? It's always been "soda" to
me, as in "Would you like a soda?" - unless, of course, it's a
specific type in which case it would be "Would you like a Fresca" or
"Tab" or whatever.

Now you are asking for it, Tammy.. ;)

I am going to make Perfection Salad for the cook-in...so you can taste
a classic. I may or may not offer it with mayo, or Miracle Whip. ;)

It's called "Someone is Gonna Die if Lilly Beth Doesn't Catch the Bouquet",
by the same authors. I've got it on my watch list.

I have so many church cookbooks from 'down home' I'm sure it's in one of
them. Will post when I find it.

Either would be the rancid icing on the nauseating cake!

I just added it to my library request list. I'm looking forward to
it. I'm sure it's a fun read. Like you, I know these people. I
guess I _am_ "these people." I'm sort of simultaneously rolling my
eyes and waxing sentimental when I read books like these.
