I don't get this...

I can buy Folate as a supplement at the health food store.

You haven't flown lately, have you? Airport security is a bitch. I wonder
if vegemite or marmite explodes? LOL

Don't most things at health food store slip under the radar since most
of the claims about the products aren't backed by the FDA?

Vegemite is handily available in America. Why anyone would want it handily
available is beyond me! ;)

I get the feeling there's more to the story. If nothing else there's
a big push for pregnant women to take folate supplements. Curious.

"Supplements" are not regulated in the same way as "food". If the
shrubbery's administration has its way its only a matter of time till
one has to get a prescription from a Dr. for vitamins.

Swell. Let in 11 million illegals, but keep out Vegemite and ban
vitamin C.

I wish Cheney would invite his boss on a hunting trip.

I only fly if someone else pays for it....

It's way beyond _my_ financial abilities!
Even with the price of gas, it's cheaper to drive across the US than to
fly at $1,200 per ticket from here to Chicago, Miami, or Ventura.

About once every 5 years for new machine training at work.

Other than that, I don't fly......

It's not legal to make "claims" on supplement bottles.
Only to list dosage reccomendations.

That's easy...

There was a serious outbreak of Spina Bifida in one area in the South
for a while.

It was traced to a Folate deficiency in the diet.

It's critical for normal neural development in fetuses

Oh, no, that is not what I was curious about. I'm talking about

There are better ways to get folic acid into your diet, Nancy. I'd
rather take a pill than choke down that stuff.

An Australian friend gave me some several years ago,and taught me how
to eat it. It was actually rather good, eaten that way.

She taught me to toast bread, then spread a very thin layer of butter
on it, then spread an incredibly thin layer of Vegemite on top of
that. Gave it a slightly salty edge.
She said that most folks make the mistake of spreading on way too
much, that just a very thin coating is what you want.

I'm talking about why something would be banned because it
contained folate. It has nothing to do with Vegemite. Say they
said, they are banning the import of chocolate because it contains
folate. That is the part I find curious, since folate is a recommended
supplement.

They want all women of child-bearing age to have enough of it, since by
the time you realize you're pregnant, it's too late for the fetus.

As a slight thread-drift, the additions they make to the white-flour
foods sold here, all the b-vitamins and iron, are needed due to the
bran and germ that they remove so the foods won't spoil as quickly (and
that they can sell for tons more as supplements). My cousin's daughter
was anemic. Everyone else in the family was fine. (She was 2 at the
time). Turns out, while her older brother was scarfing down loads of
breakfast cereal for meals and snacks, she didn't like it and wouldn't
eat it.

No permanant damage from it, either. Kid just got into Yale.

I have a couple questions, Chris. Should I use un-salted butter? Is
unsalted butter the preference in Oz? As you know, it's not in the US and
salted butter and Vegemite sounds like a salt overdose.

I tried Vegemite a couple dozen years ago and was "put off", to say the
least. But, one's tastes change and I learned long ago one can
develop a taste for foods previously disliked. I love butter so maybe
your tip may change my mind. I'm off to look for Vegemite. ;)

Ya know, I am not sure what type of butter we used. It may have been
unsalted.

My suggestion: try it with both and compare.

Nope, I lost my nerve after Vegemite.... the products are too close

From shrunklink.com?lsd

About Marmite:

Review: This tiny jar of concentrated yeast extract is quite the
breakfast food. To use Marmite, spread it thinly on toast or sandwich
bread. Wait! What do you mean by "thinly?" I mean, practically thin
enough to be a monolayer of molecules, because if you spread it any
thicker, it will taste pretty strong. Well, actually, I use a quarter
of a teaspoon on each piece of toast, which is buttered first to
lubricate the process. And wait, how would one spread it thinly on
fresh, untoasted AMERICAN bread without it tearing the fluffy crumb
into tiny balls only suitable for feeding the koi? Again, a bit of
softened butter, then a schmear of Marmite, a slice of tomato and you
have a super tea sandwich. This is often my dinner, when I want
something light.

Nutella is not even related to Vegemite. Not a fair comparison. ;-)

No. Most Aussies just use the regular salted butter. Some people try not
to let thier kids have too much because of the salt.

I personally don't like the stuff.

You're spot on Christine!
That's eggsactly the way most aussies eat Vegemite. My breakfast is
half a ruby grapefruit and some other fresh fruit followed by toast and
vegemite. Very healthy! I then can cook up a storm for dinner.
Cheers

vegemite is often used in a lot of savoury recipes and soups as well

We just use normal salted butter or the margarine/butter/canola spreads
that one uses for breakfast. Again, just a scrape is sufficient. Our
aussie breads tend not to be as sweet as American breads - and we eat
alot of whole grain breads.
Oh, when little kids are recovering from tummy upsets, they eat
'vegemite soldiers' which are slices of white bread and vegemite
(sometimes double over) cut into three strips hence the 'lined up on
the plate like soldiers" LOL

You may have heard of the advertising jingle for Vegemite ....puts the
rose in every cheek....
Cheers
Bronnie,

I thought it was more common in America than here.

It's just totally senseless. What sort of people do you have running your
country?? :)

Heh. Well, there is some reason, and I'm wondering what it is. I'm not
sure the reason given is actually the case. I guess I'll ask Kraft what
they
know about it.

The kind of person that thinks that if you don't tell kids about sex,
they'll never find out about it. Our current president signed a bill
prohibiting any kind of sex education other than abstinence in Texas
schools, back when he was Governor of Texas.

There was quote from a young woman who fought for realistic sex
education in Texas back when she was a high school student. She made no
progress. After she left Texas, she said that she had learned two
things in high school: God loves you and you will burn in hell, and sex
was so icky that you wouldn't *ever* want to do it, but you should
instead save it for somebody special.

Someplace where monthly electric bills are almost $500. Yikes.
