Default Kiwi sweetener

Hi, all--

I've been a lurker, but oh, the things you have taught me!! Thanks
much!

Somewhere in my travels I was introduced to a sweetener called
Ki-Sweet. I remember it came in the form of a powder (looked similar
to light brown sugar) and was made from kiwi fruit.

Anyone had any experience with this stuff?

Thanks a bunch,
Pam

It looks like a supplement scam. They seem to like to lie.

From Diabetes Monitor
http://www.diabetesmonitor.com/quakery.htm

.................................................. .................

http://www.pro-net-inc.com/kisweet.htm Nutrition For Life International,
Inc. Introduces All-Natural Sweetener

I recently received an unsolicited e-mail (spam) that promoted this
product. At their website, they claim that "Ki-Sweet(TM), an all-
natural sweetener made from kiwi fruit... is the first product of its
kind made from kiwi fruit. It offers healthier benefits over the
widely-used glucose and sucrose-based sweeteners. Most natural
sweeteners on the market today are made from high- glycemic ingredients,
and the artificial sweeteners can contain chemicals and other
substances. Ki-Sweet(TM) is made from 100% natural kiwi fruit with no
additives or preservatives. It is low glycemic; it does not
significantly elevate blood sugar or insulin levels, making it safe for
diabetics, hypoglycemics, pregnant or lactating mothers, and children.
....Ki-Sweet(TM) carries the Seal of Approval from the Glycemic Research
Institute as well as a special designation from the American Diabetes
Association."

[I wrote to the American Diabetes Association about this statement, and
received a reply that stated this claim of a "special designation"
simply isn't true.] [August 11, 1998]

[Further information received from the Glycemic Research Institute
indicates that the reference that was made to "a special designation by
the ADA" was incorrectly made, independent of the product manufacturer's
knowledge. The website for this product was http://www.ekisweet.com
(website unavailable 20Oct2004.) Added April 2, 2002.].

I saw that but too much of it isn't adding up to me.

Thanks, Dennis. I suspect you may be right. I called this 800 # and
spoke with the man who invented (? I'm not sure what the appropriate
term is). Anyway, he was very enthusiastic about his product, and the
bottom line is he wanted me to pay some kind of fee to become a
distributer.

Oh, and he sent me a sample. I had to laugh because it was in one of
those little bags that costume jewelry comes in-- maybe 3x4 cm?
The first thought that hit me was how it resembled an illegal
substance!

Don't get me wrong. I am not in any shape or form saying it's
illegal. It just struck me funny. AND I have NO experience with
illegal substances. ;-)

I used it on cereal and I have to admit it tasted fine, but I wonder
what the results would do when cooking the stuff. You know-- like how
you're not supposed to cook one of the sweeteners.

Deep down at heart I'm a pink fan when it comes to sweeteners.

Take care,
Pam

Hi, Julie--

Honestly I was off in my own little world when I spoke with the man on
the phone and didn't think to ask. I was more taken back by his offer
to become a distributer.

And as for other ingredients, the little sample I got was in a wee
plastic bag that bame in a #10 envelope. No labels. No nothing.

Thanks,
Pam

This is fructose! Fructose is, indeed, low glycemic, but, at the same time, it's linked to a host of health issues including increased triglycerides and increased insulin resistence. Evil stuff, regardless of the name they slap on it.

Agave Nectar - same thing
Whey Low - ditto
Slimsweet - ditto

etc. etc. etc.
