Do you overeat at buffets?

I have read that a lot of people do and I have witnessed it happen. Some
people say they just have to have the dessert if it is there. I don't get
that at all. I love buffets because I can get what I want/need and only
what I want/need. I guess I should say I love *some* buffets. Because I
certainly have seen some where I could not eat. I know I don't need dessert
so I don't even bother to look at it.

I don't care for buffets much. Too many people, especially young children,
grabbing and touching the food makes it unappetizing to me in my older
years. Sort of the same thing as those bulk bins in stores. Yecch! That
being said, I really can't say I've ever noticed anybody elses plate in a
restaurant unless they were at my table.

The ones we eat at do not let children under 10 take their own food. That
being said, we won't eat anything that looks messed up.

I buy certain things from bulk bins. Mainly the bins that are up high with
the chute, or wrapped things.

the last straw for me at a buffet was when the guy ahead of me sneezed all
over everything..pulled out a handkerchief and blew his nose and put it in
his pocket and proceeded to finger everything possible...my wife and I left
the line and have not been back to any buffet since.

it is bad enough at the store when the old lady (there's always one) poke
holes in the fruit and fresh baked goods..handles every tomato and squishes
all things squish able..

what's up with that anyhoo?..lol

I have seen it hundreds of times so its clearly a thing..I mean its not a
quality test as they ruin a ton of stuff then either take a untouched one
and move on or ruin items then move on taking nothing.

but yes I have seen some gross behavior in buffets and bulk food bins

I used to buy raw almonds at my store until they stopped bagging them and
went to bulk bins..

same with spices..they bought good fresh spices and bagged them themselves
for resale but got lazy and went to bulk bins

sigh..

Before I retired, I once went into a grocery store where they had a
salad bar which was a nice choice for a healthy lunch in a hurry. I
was just getting ready to take some salad, when this boy about 7 or 8
yrs old started playing with the shredded cheese like it was play doh,
squooshing it through his fingers and playing with it.

His mother said NOTHING while her kid did this!!!!! I told the kid
off, then told the mother off. She stalked off in a hissy fit, her
darling monster in tow.

Then I told the guy at the deli counter that was supposed to be
minding the salad bar, and he did NOTHING also. I can't imagine
where that kid's dirty little mitts had been, and all the poor slobs
taking that cheese and sprinkling it over their salads, completely
unaware.

UGH!

A guy at the Sprint store did that to the phone displays. Angela wanted to
look at them. I told her to look with her eyes and not touch anything.

Heard that Evelyn, too much of that going on in this day and age. You can't
change it, so best to avoid it IMO. Sad, but true that I just avoid it.

I go with my husband to one of his favorite places to eat, a chinese
buffet. They have a sneeze guard, a glass protector over the food,
and every dish has a long handled spoon in it, to prevent people from
getting too close or breathing or coughing on the food. The
particular buffet we go to, puts out only a smallish amount of food at
a time in order to keep things fresh. We understand there is only so
much you can do and only so much you can guarantee or control. I had
a second job years ago working in restaurants. You really don't want
to know what happens behind the scenes. I think taking my chances at
a buffet is no more dangerous than ordering ala carte.

Most germs are airborne. Unless you wear a mask you can't get away from
all the germs in the air after a sneeze, cough etc. I forget how many
feet germs go with a sneeze or cough, its pretty far anyway. Just
walking down the street or being in a building with people exposes you
to huge amounts of airborne germs.

I won't eat at the Chinese buffets. Too much stuff I can't eat there and
too little that I can. I always wind up having a hypo after I've been to
one.

That is why I only will eat at this one particular buffet. Most of
them are awful. I can find enough foods I can eat without problems
there, while hubby pigs out.

ewwwwwwwwwwwwww!

I am a germaphobe anyway so tried to believe in the sneeze guard etc because
I like well liked eating out and trying different foods.

now its just too many stories of people getting sick..not just at buffets
but at all sorts of restaurants and often its due to what happened in the
fields and processing plants BEFORE it even got to the restaurant.

things like lettuce and peaches etc were killing people..

I know how well I wash and prep my food at home so its less of a risk then
at a restaurant who probably opens the bags and dumps them into a bin for
service.

I can't imagine
where that kid's dirty little mitts had been, and all the poor slobs
taking that cheese and sprinkling it over their salads, completely
unaware.

UGH!

my wife pointed out to me that EVERYONE touches that ladle/spoon/tong handle
so even if they dont touch the food your still getting contact with
everyone before you.

its more of the fact people dont wash their hands after the bathroom more
then just germs.

think about this..everyone going into a buffet uses the door handle then the
money to pay if its pay ahead like many are then they touch the chair or the
tables etc to get their seats then they get right to the buffet and start
touching everything.

nobody goes to the place goes to the bathroom to wash their hands and then
goes to the line..

I worked at kfc..never ate there again..I worked at dominos..never ate them
again..same goes for papa johns and little ceasers

I still ate pizza hut because it really was a hands off affair once it was
cooked and their stuff was decent..at least then one I sometime ate at.

I stopped eating McDonalds and burger king due to poor food handling I saw
or experienced.

at burger king I saw a kid at the fries chewing tobacco and spitting into a
trash can at his feet..he drops the fry scoop into the same bin and takes it
out and commences to scoop fries..I almost threw up and had a fit..a very
loud fit and once hearing about many people also looked ill and left..the
manager acted like I was crazy to complain and was right next to the kid.

at McDonalds my wife ordered a salad and it had a cigarette butt and a empty
coffee creamer cup thingy in it..either the employee did it to be a jerk or
somebody returned a salad and they "restocked" it.

but since DX I almost never eat out so its not a issue.

I like Subway. Made in front of your eyes (I usually have a salad bowl)
by staff who wear gloves on both hands and discard after each order,
i.e. they don't keep the same gloves on for a lot of orders. My local
noodle bar does the same, gather the ingredients in front of you and put
it all in a large bowl. The cook, who you also see, tips it straight
into the wok. I often have their stir frys sans noodles, the chef knows
me now. His elderly mum is also diabetic and we often chat about food,
lol.

I am about to send in complaints to Coles and Woolworths (our two major
supermarket chains) about their new-fangled deli practices. Once upon a
time the deli staff put on at least one fresh glove to do your order.
Now they wear none, they scoop deli goods into a plastic bag using the
bag as the scoop. More often than not the food is over the amount you
want and some has to go back into the tray, sometimes not easily, so I
have noticed the food get touched in a small way (albeit accidentally)
by bare hands every so often.

Wear a glove or carry the antibacterial gels and wipes for use after
ladling. Pain in the arse but so many bugs around these days, airborne
and on public objects.

considering all of your various allergies and dislikes, I would think the last
place you would eat would be at restaurants, especially buffets. how do you
survive your hysteria of not knowing what is in the food (and don't pretend that
you know what is in the food as you know full well that restaurants are always
changing the recipes to reflect changes in taste or expenses)

I have heard horror stories about the Subway by Angela's dance studio. You
couldn't pay me to eat there. So many people have complained about it.

We recently got sandwiches for my parents at the Subway by their house. I
didn't really see anything wrong. They didn't change their gloves that I
could see. But the sandwiches were just as measly as I remembered them only
with a lot less lettuce. Way back when I used to get them, they would pull
the insides out of the bread and stuff a lot of lettuce in there. But there
was very little meat or cheese on the sandwich. These days they don't pull
the insides out. But still very little meat or cheese.

As for the salads, the one time Angela and I got them, they were inedible.
Just a bowl of shredded iceberg lettuce with some sandwich toppings on it.
No meat or cheese.

I have not eaten at any of the Pho places although they are all over the
place here. My husband loves the stuff but it just doesn't look appealing
to me at all and they use a lot of cuts of meat I would never eat.

That's not good! We very rarely buy from the deli. Recently we met a new
employee at Albertsons. Angela wanted to know what the difference was
between two different potato salads. She didn't know for sure so she gave
her a sample of each. Tiny bowls and tiny spoons. We bought some potato
salad from her and the next week we bought a few JoJos. But normally we
don't eat that stuff.

The Dr. told us that the stomach bug virus is resistant to the antibacterial

Heh. I noticed a grandson (5 years old at the time) washing his hands after
the bathroom - he used his elbow to close the faucet. But then, both his
parents are MDs (and now PhDs).

subway is the last fast food place I've eaten at..I got a 6 inch sub and
scooped the inside of the bread out and it was a cheese bread so I figured
the fat and protein might help..lol

it was good but with subway WAYYYY more then Chinese I'm hungry again right
away..those subs are like air to me.

seeing Woolworths cracks me up..they disappeared from the states in the 80's
replaced by Walgreens and if I recall...he created Wal-Mart..I think..not
sure and too lazy to Google..lol

it always reminds me of the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" where the
lead was banned from the Woolworths..lol

They are an icon here. They separated into two branches. Originally
Woolies was a dept store style shop, but on a much smaller scale. Then
it became a supermarket and they started the Big W chain of dept stores
which are way cheaper than KMart in my opinion, better stuff too. They
have now branched out into mega hardware stores as well.

As to Subway, I rarely buy the sub, I have bought salads in a bowl from
them for years. Mainly because they have so many different items and
meats you can put into it for the same price. And so many sauces to
choose from ;)

Sounds like a plan :) I think I avoided one recently by buying in some
probiotics. I never miss catching a tummy bug in this family and this
time I did. Strangely, Jazz hasn't caught anything in the last two
years. Not since she had the swine flu injection. She normally gets
everything under the sun especially colds which often go to her chest.
I actually have a dilemma now because no doctor here knows here and she
has to have all kinds of medical reports done before she turns 16 next
month. That's when she leaves my family payments and gets Disability
Support Pension (not a full one until she is 21 and no difference in
amounts of money coming into the household but its something I have to
do).

In the videos she seems very happy, loves the music and dancing and
is quite intent in getting the hand movements correct. She shows

I have only had a Subway sandwich a few times but it didn't even come close
to filling me up.

I don't like making sandwiches. But when I make one, I put a LOT of filling
in it. Half of one of my sandwiches is quite filling to me.

Angela got a pastrami sandwich from Safeway the other day. She measured it.
Was over 6" long, had plenty of meat and cheese in it and was only $2.48.
Yes, I know it would have been cheaper still if we had made it at home but
we don't buy a lot of bread and unless her dad is home, there is no way we
could eat a pack of sub buns.

Walmart is not related to Woolworths. They were a dime store here and they
were still in MA in the mid/late '90s. The one in Falmouth went out of
business a few years before Angela was born. I bought tons of stuff there
for cheap. Then when I was pregnant with her we stopped at one in some
other city on the way to Boston. Can't remember where. They were going out
of business as well and I got some cheap yarn there. Made a baby blanket
for her in with a peach and green ombre yarn. It matched her green
stroller. The one here in Seattle went out of business probably in the
early/mid 80's. I got a lot of stuff there too.

I loved Woolworths! They were a great place to go for a cheap lunch or
banana split. Not that I ate banana splits because I didn't like them. But
they did do the balloon thing. You'd pop a balloon and inside it would tell
you how much your banana split would cost. It was always discounted from
what was listed on the menu and in some cases it was free.

For a time they had a candy counter but eventually that went the way of the
wind. I think they may have also had popcorn.

One thing I really liked about them was that when I was feeling really
broke, I could scrape together the coins from my piggy bank and I could go
there and still be able to buy something.

Also Woolworths saved the day when we went to the Philadelphia zoo. My FIL
thought we were nuts because it was supposed to rain that day. I just
laughed and told him I was from Washington. I was used to rain. Well the
rain that we get here for the most part is not at all like the rain that
they have there! We walked into a torrential downpour that lasted all day.
We bought some cheap little umbrellas at an Asian store and some kiddy
ponchos at the zoo. But we were still drenched.

After we left the zoo, my husband drove around in Philly until I spotted the
Woolworths. I told him to park the car. We were both drenched to the bone.
In there I was able to get some dry socks, a T shirt and a pair of sweat
pants. I got dry clothes for him too but they didn't have any men's shoes
he could wear. He has wide feet. I got some cheap canvas shoes for myself.
Pretty much the only shoes they had. They were fine when I was just sitting
in the car. But to walk on? OMG! They'd put someone lame in no time flat.
I can't imagine what was wrong with them to have caused so much foot pain
but they sure did. I tried to throw them out but my MIL pulled them from
the trash. She and I wore the same size at the time. I told her they were
bad and she didn't want them but she said she would give them to the poor.
I said I didn't want to wish them on the poor and I promised her I would buy
and donate a good pair of shoes to the poor when I got home. Which I did.
I do remember that trip very well. Wished after we left there that I had
bought some sort of long sleeved something or other although I think during
the summer they may not have had anything. After getting drenched to the
bone I was freezing all day!

In Australia they tend to overfill sandwiches. Very messy ;) My daughter
has to ask for a little of everything she wants in the salad line.
They look at her like she has two heads, lol.

Angela sometimes orders a chef salad and then decides that she doesn't
really like it. She likes the ones they sell at the grocery store because
they are somewhat small and have just a few bites of each kind of topping.
But at a restaurant they are so huge she can't even make a dent in them.

At Subway on the odd occasion I go there I always ask for a lot less
lettuce they seem to try to put a whole one on each roll :-)

Been following this thread, and I never eat at Subway because they are
junk. For a good fast sandwich we go to Blimpie. They make an
awesome tuna sandwich well filled with good quality tuna. Of course
every shop is slightly different and some may not make it as well. You
get to choose your own bread and every topping you like. They make
the sandwich to order just as you tell them to. I usually discard
most of the bread, but Hubby eats his.

So ask them to pack up what is left and have it the next day. I do that
all the time with some of hose huge salads. If you don't let it sit a
week, iis fine.

Must be different here, there are a few varieties of roll, the salads,
in my experience, have always been fresh. I usually have just the salad
though. Usually its lettuce, tomato, cucumber, carrot, peppers, onions,
olives, jalapenos, pickle. A choice of a dozen or so sauces and whatever
protein I fancy.

I always take home whatever leftovers I have from a restaurant. I
also always eat leftover salad. In fact I love it and regard it as a
treat! The Italians make a deliberately wilted salad using hot
dressing in some instances.
