For grilling, I wouldn't use anything other than my Thermapen. For smoking,
it's useless; a remote probe is far better. Is it worth $100? I have more
money than brains, so for me, yes.

For grilling, especially steaks, I don't use anything except my nose and
eye. I just want it nicely charred on the outside when I flip it. If
someone wants it medium rare, I leave it a minute longer on a side. No
complaints in 20 years. If someone wanted it more well done, I'd tell 'em
to toss it back on for a few minutes more or cook their own next time.
Hasn't happened yet. Maybe it's the company I keep. ;-)
