A helpful note to the newbies in this group, and a big welcome!!
Hi and a big WELCOME to AFB. :-) In order to get a flavor of what this
newsgroup spends most of its time talking about, please read the FAQ which is located at: http://www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/faq2/toc.html That document is the best single-source document on traditional barbecue that I've yet to see. And that's what this NG is primarily focused on..... traditional methods of BBQ. In addition to the pits and smokers that we use to produce BBQ, many of us also use gas grills for high heat cooking, i.e. steaks, burgers, and such. I myself use a Weber Genesis from time-to-time. So, yes, grilling and other forms of outdoor cooking are sometimes talked about. It's just not the main focus for most of us here. This is a primary hang-out for a lot of hard-core BBQ "enthusiasts", and it's the main theme of this NG. So if you're a griller, and you have a recipe for ribs or pork which you think of as "bbq", don't be surprised or upset if we attempt to "show you the light". :-) The FAQ will help you understand the differences between grilling and barbecue. To this end, we may use gentle corrections to terminology which are often wrongly-used by the typical back-yard grill-meister. Hopefully this post will help you avoid getting your feathered underwear into a ruffled knot, because we really want you to stay. And you may just decide that you need to set the gasser aside for hot dogs, hamburgers, and steaks, while picking up a wood-fired pit to 'Q the stuff dreams are made of. Another newsgroup that you might enjoy is found at alt.binaries.food. That is the newsgroup to which many of us post photos of what we 'Q and grill and drink, and what we use for 'Qing and grilling and drinking. If you want to post photos or other binaries, THAT is the place to do it. Please, DO NOT post binaries in *this* newsgroup, as this is a text only ng. Before I forget, here's a hint based on the strong preferences of most subscribers to AFB: When you post a message, trim out any text that you are responding to which is not relevant to your direct reply. Then place your response at the bottom of the message, or interleaved into the body of the text to which you are replying. For further information on the correct methods of proper quotation and posting: http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote2.html#ss2.1 No one can prevent you from top-posting; but that is a choice which will likely draw you some flames. :-) If you use Outlook Express as your newsreader, there is a great piece of freeware that a lot of us have downloaded to make Outlook Express a much better tool. It is called QuoteFix. http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/oe-quotefix/ Best and Warm Regards to y'all. <BG> Dave |
