SURVEY: Binaries on Alt.Food.Barbecue

The expiration time on Alt.Binaries.Food is preposterous.
Being an alt.binaries group, it gets lumped in with the handfuls of PORN groups.
The pix folks post of their food porn only last long enough for the addicts to
view them. When us reformed (or non-admitted) addicts get there the beautiful
pix are long gone.

I would like to see if there is objection to posting of BBQ Pictures to this
group.

Please reply to the top of this thread with a simple subject line of Yes or No.

There is a reason why binary groups expire quickly: binaries take up
a lot of server space. What you are proposing could result in AFB
expiring more quickly on lots of servers.

I would like to see if there is objection to posting of BBQ Pictures to this
group.

Binaries don't belong in non-binary groups. Period.

Whuh? WTH is "the top of this thread"? And why would you want to wade
through a bazillion posts titled YES and NO?

I'm a new poster here, but have been lurking for a few weeks and
(hopefully :-) have a good about the group and it's personalities.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea to post binaries to a non-binary
group (only a small portion of the alt hierarchy is binary). I access
Usenet from a couple of different sources, some of which tolerate
binaries and some of which don't. For example, right now I'm using a
Supernews account that specifically doesn't include any binary groups
(it's quite a bit cheaper than one that does). If this groups started
including binaries, at best I wouldn't get the images, but at worst
Supernews might start considering this a binary group and drop it from
their non-binary service. Google also doesn't archive or support
binaries, so anyone who posts from Google would be left out.

Top posting is also evil, but it's probably not a good idea to resurrect
that thread right now ;-)

So you'ld like to see the retention in this group become as
low as the binary groups?

Binaries to text groups usually get blocked by news service
providers. Your binary posts would not be seen by most
people. Repeated posting of binaries to text groups may be
considered abuse by your news service and get your account
terminated.

My news provider says, " Alt.binaries.food has 6810
articles, and 63.6 days of retention, alt.food.barbecue has
21984 articles, and 284.5 days of retention."

Maybe you should get a better news provider.

It's probably your news provider, the retention mine provides is only 24-48
hours for ALL binary groups. Blech. Then again, I won't die if I dont see
something, or can always ask for a repost.
I'm against as well, sorry.

Hell no that's what the binary groups are for.....

Try using a site that archives the binary groups or a pay service and
you can see what you need. Try this:

http://www.usenet-replayer.com
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

SURVEY: Binaries on Alt.Food.Barbecue _NO_!

And again, "NO"

The retention time is a function of the policies of YOUR SELECTED news
provider. Attempting to solve the problem(s) that you have with your
selected provider by impacting every other reader of this newsgroup is
rather selfish, not to say impractical.

Why so? Most news providers do not go out of their way to cater to
usenet, regarding it as a sort of mysterious burden they have to
assume. If you transform a non-binary group into a binary group they
will eventually respond to the increased resources consumed and the
retention will fall in line with their treatment of other binaries
groups. For those readers whose ISP or news provider do not carry
binary groups as a matter of policy, they will eventually conclude
that afb is a binaries group and drop it. In "solving" your problem
you make it more likely that others will lose access to afb altogether
or force them to do what you should do. Get a different news
provider.

That said, you are always free to propose changes to the group's
charter and there are sanctioned means to do so

$0.02 (top-posted only because you so requested...)

Yes, I object to posting binaries in a non-binary newsgroup. Get
addicted or get a better newsgroup provider.

ObBBQ: 8 rolled racks of BRITU on the WSM right now. Weather outside is
