What exactly is espresso powder? Is it just espresso beans ground up fine?

It's like instant coffee -- very strong instant coffee. Nestle makes
a quite good instant espresso, in terms of flavor for baking/cooking.
I wouldn't drink the stuff, but I'm rather persnickety about
coffee-type stuff.

Finely ground espresso beans is what you use to make real espresso.
