Even if you never change the filter, you (generic) should empty the
pitcher completely and wash the inside occasionally.

My elderly inlaws NEVER changed filters or washed the pitcher (I'm
talking about 6 months or more here)and every time we visited I did it
for them because there was slime mold in the water and a brownish sludge
in the bottom. Their well water was terrible and gunked up the filter
more than any I had ever seen.
