Having received my Emeril 12" skillet, I realize that a 12" skillet is
the measurement across the top, and this skillet measures 8-1/2" at
the base.

I've noticed that the pans with straight sides, called saute pans, have the
same measurement across the top and the base. Skillets usually have flared
sides.
