If the port is for the dad-to-be to drink now or in a few years, there
are many choices. However if you want a year-of-the-birth port for the
father or son, you will have to wait a few years. The 2007 port will
not be made for a few months, and it may or may not be declared a
vintage port. Vintage port can be slow to mature, and most recent
bottles would need to be stored for many years. A vintage year usually
is not released unless the wine is at least above average. Some of the
better vintage ports often include Cockburn, Croft, Dow, Fonseca,
Graham, Quinta do Noval, Taylor, Waare, and a few others. Some of
these will be available within your price range when relatively young.
However a top vintage port may need over 10 and up to 20 or more years
to be at the best. These older examples, especially if they have been
well rated by critics can exceed your price range. Some of the firms
make very good tawny ports that are aged in wood, and these usually
are ready to drink. The older examples are of course more expensive.
Ferreira makes Duque de Braganca. Graham's makes good 10 and 20 year
old tawnys. Taylor's makes very good 40 and 20 year old tawnys. There
are others.
