Default Old Fashioned Tea Cakes (Cookies)

Old Fashioned Tea Cakes (Cookies)

4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cinnamon, nutmeg or sugar to sprinkle (optional)

Cream butter, add sugar gradually and mix well. In another bowl wisk dry
ingredients together. To the butter and sugar mixture, add sour cream
alternately with dry ingredients and mix well between each addition. On
lightly floured surface roll out as moist as possible (add flour to
surface, as needed) and very thin (1/4" or thinner). Cut out with favorite
cookie cutters dipped in flour. Transfer to cookie sheet and brush off
excess flour with brush. Sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg or sugar, if
desired. Bake in oven at 450 degrees about 10 min or until very very
lightly brown.

Tips: Dough is very moist and sometimes difficult to work with. Avoid
working more flour into the dough as this will make the cookies tough.
Originally, we used a drinking glass dipped in flour to cut them out. The
thinner they are, the crisper they come out of the oven. These cookies are
worth the effort! Great for dunking in coffee.

Original recipe came from 1946 recipe book "Favorite Dallas County
Recipes" by the Dallas County Home Demonstrators Club. This has been a
favorite family recipe since then and has passed from generation to
generation.
