This is true. Many people equate being poor with being redneck or
trash, which isn't always true. FWIW, some of the most gun-toting-est,
junkyard jerks I have run into have been here on the west coast. But
I will say that the worst we have been treated as an interracial
couple, and DH as a "black" man, has been in North Carolina, Texas, and
a few other southern states. There are parts of the south he won't
drive through, for example. Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond were
elected and re-elected because of people who shared their ideals.

But, like DH says "There are asshole everywhere." You really just have
to find your own niche and make a life for yourself.
