The afternoon was much better. I went by the video store. I was having trouble finding
enough older movies to get the 5 movies for 7 nights for $5, and then I noticed their
new prices and saw that special was no $7, roughly a 40% increase, so I decided to
forgo the videos. I stopped for a newspaper on the way to Hortons where I had a medium
size black coffee and a cranberry blueberry bran muffin. The girl at the counter tried
to give me to butters but I told her I only needed on. there wasn't a lot of
interesting news, the crossword puzzle was easy but I had some difficulty with the
Jumble Puzzle.
After I finished there I headed over to the Y and had a pretty rigorous workout. I did
20 minutes on the cross trainer before I went to the weight stations. I did a few extra
sets on some of them, especially on the leg presses because I have a riding lesson
coming up and need to keep my legs in shape for posting and cantering. I did a total of
85,000 lbs in weights. Then I did a mile on the walking track at a brisk pace. That
gave me a total of 1045 Fittlinx points bringing me to a a little more than 109,000
since I signed up to that tracking program last April.
I didn't bother going to the liquor store, just for groceries. Since I stocked up on
meat for the month last week I didn't get too much. I picked up some chicken wings to
make Buffalo wings tomorrow and a small boneless leg of lamb for Sunday. I decided to
get some shrimp for tonight, just the cheap medium size white shrimp because I am going
to fry them in butter or oil with lots of garlic and garlic and a some dried chili and
serve it with angel hair pasta. I got a nice fresh baguette. I have a bottle of
Gerwurztraminer chilling that should go nicely with it, but there is also some
Dubrois, an inexpensive Hungarian white that is not bad, and can stand up to the heavy
flavouring and spices of the sauce.
I picked up so phyllo pastry. I wish I had been able to get some fresh because I have a
hankering to make a batch of Galakabouriko, a thick sweet custard baked in a pan lined
and covered with Phyllo and then drizzled with a honey syrup.
That left me to wonder about dessert. I picked up a pound of some nice looking fresh
strawberries. I was all set to leave when I remembered that I needed some espresso
coffee. I have never had much luck grinding my own espresso. I get it too fine or too
coarse.
Of course when I got home I had to put the groceries away. I made sure the phyllo went
into the fridge to thaw so that I can use it tomorrow. The phone was flashing to
indicate a message, but when I discovered that it was for my wife I just hung up
because it is easier for her to see the flasher and check it herself than it is for me
to remember to tell her that there was a message, never mind remembering the details.
So now I am just sitting around reading newsgroups. My wife is out with her retired
teachers Friday afternoon walking group. She will probably drop by to visit my mother
on the way home and drop off the stamps she had offered to pick up for her. When she
gets home we will sit down and have a drink and some canapés, just liver pate on Breton
crackers and some cream cheese with red pepper jelly on Triskets. She will have one of
her rum concoctions and I will have a Manhattan. We ill likely have a few games of
cribbage. I will probably have a second Manhattan, but not a third because it is not
safe for me to be around hot stoves and sharp knives after three of them.
If I hadn't been so cheap and refused to pay the 40% increase in rental fees we would
have been able to watch a video tonight, but I will check the online tv listings to see
what there is on the movie channels.
