If the grate is rusty I would replace it personally.
You can pick up a new grate very reasonably priced at your local Ace,Lowes,
(dare I say wal-mart) etc.....
Other than that just put a bunch of lump or charcoil in it and let it burn
all the old stuff off for a while before using it.
