I'm wondering now if the lifetime of a toaster oven is
inverse to the cost or is it that we just don't care as much
when a less expensive model drops dead after 2-5 years?

After years of buying GE toaster ovens - which seemed to
have a 5 year lifetime, I went for an expensive brand. It
was killed by kids who decided to heat their tortillas on
the rack. After that, I gave up on toaster ovens. I use a
real toaster and a regular oven now.
