Looking for culinary purity in the Balkans is sure to be very
productive. The issue of who invented moussaka has really divided the
nations there and caused them to have a mere dozen or so wars just in
the 20th century.
One thing is for sure - NEVER:
1. Order Turkish wine - horrible (not that the Greek Retsina is any
better)
2. Get drunk on Greek Ouzo - that's a hangover that lasts longer than
Odyssey's journey home (not that the Turkish Raki is any better)
3. Assume that your restaurant bill is right - Applies to the entire
Balkans
4. Order fish in Macedonia
5. Budget less than 3 hours for lunch in Bulgaria
6. Order your meat rare (anywhere)
7. Hope to maintain your Atkins diet while there (you should do that
anyway, if you ask me)
Other than that - it's great food (even if it tends to be a little
overcooked), whoever invented it.
