can be ignored?

But if she used insider information, she let self interest transcend the
law. That would be illegal.
It would be in my self interest to grab the cash from the register at the
supermarket. Should that be allowed?

It is a combinationof both. Yes, it probably got out of hand, but if she
was honest up front, she would have probably done little or no time and the
prosecutors would have missed on the publicity. She is now reaping the
benefits of self inposed martyrdom since she made the decision to do time
instead of waiting for appeal. Good move on her part.
