I feel your pain and I don't understand why you're getting so much
heat over a little rant. I guess it's just the way of usenet. <g>
I'm curious what the age of the host was? If these were all 19-20
year old college students I'd understand. Also, how was the
invitation worded? I've been to afternoon party's that were "cake and
coffee." That was fine and quite socially acceptable. I don't think
I've ever had as bad of an experience as you've described, but I've
been to Saturday night "cocktail party's" with lots of booze and
nothing to eat but stale peanuts and chips. Luckily I wasn't the only
guest who thought to bring something.
Lack of social skills are even more annoying when it's family. I
have a SIL who always serves the same nasty cottage cheese lasagna.
She announces how much each food item was on sale for, and my brother
complains about the cost of throwing a birthday party for the kids.
Yet, we are silently expected to bring gifts I always eat something
before I go.
