The few pieces of La Cruset (sp?) porcelain-over-cast-iron that we own
have *lots* of character from mishaps like this.

Something that just occurred to me, and might be useful next time
(there will be a next time.) "Washing soda" is a lot stronger than
baking soda, and a lot milder than lye. HTH
