That "ancient Usenet text [that I] keep dragging up" are figuratively
thwapping John with a trout. His offense against me was an attack on
my character, and I retaliated in kind, using his own words, and while
that "ancient Usenet" post might be a dead trout, thwapping a person
with a live trout would be an act of cruelty toward an innocent fish.
