Many years ago I did that too, engineering companies hired people to
work for them at various trades. That's how I came to work at
Lockheed on the SST. Lockheed and Boeing were after the contract but
in the end France got the 'gig'. At that time that employment was not
called gigs, was refered to as jobshoppers. We were paid nearly three
times Lockheed's normal rate but with no benefits. I remember my
first take home pay for 40 hours was a check for $444... good money
for 1965... and I opted for the graveyard shift, midnight to 6 AM but
was paid for 8 hours... in fact we stopped work at 5:30 and spent a
half hour cleaning the machines and sweeping the shop floors.
