I am awaiting my second Moderna vaccine dose.
The greatest flaw here in NJ is vaccine supply. Shortages of supply
make it more complicated to open appointments and that causes jams in
sign-ups. The state is fine with their distribution and staffing, but
lack of vaccine causes glitches.
Here in NJ, there are state/county/town operated centers as well as
hospitals that are creating programs. Walgreens and CVS, both of which
are functioning as dispensers for long term facilities, are not under
the aegis of the state, but are under Fed regs.
One of the biggest hurdles to getting appointments here in NJ, is that
most facilities will only accept one appt per IP and some do not like
to cell phones. That is ok for me, as I have access to a lot of
devices, but it is by pure happenstance that I got an appointment.
Many seniors are not computer savvy enough to play the re-load the
page game that can make the difference in a queue. It's like getting
Springsteen or Hamilton tickets, but mortally dangerous if it fails.
One of my kids, who works at a NYC hospital and always seeking vaccine
access for his discharging patients, saw a facility open appointments
here in NJ. He bopped to the nurses's station and got this set up for
me, his step-father, his father and his step-mother. Purely right
time, right place. He, himself, was vaccinated as part of his hospital
program, but no one in the family has been able to find an appt for
one of the other kids, who is also qualified. That kid is waitlisted
and when more vaccines are available, I assume she will get her
email/phone call/text message. The hospital kid has also taken it upon
himself to try to find appts for some elderly and infirm friends of
the family, who would be utterly confounded by signing up themselves
or even arranging transport to a vaccination facility. No line
jumping- none of this is done through his hospital or his medical
connections. Mostly it is a result of his familiarity with med
computer systems in general, and his many years playing fast paced
video games on different platforms- at least that is what I tease him
about.
We've a large storm coming in tonight that will last until Tuesday.
Vaccine distribution centers in NJ, NY & CT are scrambling to
re-arrange appointments. It just adds another wrinkle onto a system
that is groaning under supply and demand difficulties.
