I have to wonder about the demographics of the people in Canada who are
being prioritized for vaccination. The very first were the people
working in long term care facilities, mostly people of colour, like
Fillippino and Caribbean women. Next were native people in remote
communities. The official reason for the later was that they have
limited access to health care in their remote communities. I heard a
news story the other day where they were so happy to have vaccinated 700
elders in a remote first nation community. I had to really question
that one because they had no infections at all in that community. None.
Meanwhile, there are hot spots with rising rates who desperately need
the vaccine.
The reason I question the demographics is that a couple weeks ago I
heard a person of colour complaining about how vaccines are usually
developed by white Europeans and tested on people of colour. The
suggestion was that if it had serious side effects or lacked
effectiveness it would affect those people of colour and white people
would get the new and improved version. Then they started with the
vaccination program and, sure enough... people of colour.
Sometimes you just can't win.
