Ed didn't actually get fast food.
The joke is that the teller of the joke ordered two large fries. Even you
would expect to get two servings of french fries. However, what the
joke-teller indirectly claims to have expected was two enormous individual
french fries. Just for illustrative purposes, suppose he expected each
french fry to be 4" x 4" x 24".
What he got was two servings of normal-sized french fries, thus
defeating his misguided and essentially stupid expectation. The
joke's on him.
