First of all when you first caped it with the airlock, at what level was the
contents.
One should normally not fill above the rim of the demijohn.
However seeing as you have a gusher you may consider splitting your batch,
and then when all
as settled down retuning to the original container.

The problem that faces anybody is how much liquid to put in at the start, I
usually
don't exceed 3/4 of the demijohn (1 gallon glass jar ),this allows for
adding other items,
water, sugar etc. And the problem you have encountered.
