There certainly was an effort to hide the truth about lactose intolerance by the dairy industry. That their product was the cause of stomach distress was something they wanted to keep under wraps. Acidophilus was a product that can be safely drunk by those folks with an intolerance to lactose. The weird part was that the sellers couldn't say anything about that least they open a carton of worms. The greatest trick the milk industry ever pulled was convincing the world that lactose intolerance didn't exist.

I was an inquisitive lad so I did spend some time trying to figure out why acidophilus milks existed. It wasn't until the 90's that the milk carton mentioned that it could help with your digestion. By that time I had already figured it out. I had already learned about lactose intolerance and acidophilus milk. I had already learned that Asians are not very interested in milk and milk products. - they do however, have a large number of milk based fermented drinks that are actually probiotics. They've been drinking probiotics since the 1920's.
