I did some checking and I found that most sites indicate that slaw is
coleslaw.... cabbage salad. Most of the cultures and their respective
languages have other words for salad. If a deli or restaurant offers
slaw on the menu you can be pretty sure it will be coleslaw.
That being said, I once had a very tasty carrot salad at a very rustic
restaurant just outside of Verdun, France. It was very finely shredded
carrot with quite a bit of garlic in a vinaigrette. It also had a lot of
black pepper. it was delicious.
