I know that folks have talked about using Coca-Cola as a cooking
medium for ham. It also can be used for other pork (duh, I know) and
I have several recipes from my grandmother's day for Coca-Cola in
chocolate and spice cakes (they're actually pretty good). Coca-Cola
is sweet and also acidic, so it will break down meat fibers. It also
cooks down to a syrup, hence the use as a basting liquid for hams.
I've also used Dr. Pepper as a marinating base, and it worked very
well. Other sodas? My mom had a recipe for a 7-Up cake that was out
of this world; unfortunately, she lost it a few years back. Nothing
reminds me of childhood more than a church social with her bringing
the 7-Up cake.
