There's E10, E15, and E85 as far as I know.

I agree with using premium, it's all I use in all my gas engines.
Everything runs better, with more power and slightly better economy.

Your mechanic is either doesn't have a clue, or your recollection of
what he said to you isn't quite right. Some gas engines run just fine
on ethanol without any issues. A lot don't. In fact E85 has an octane
of 108, which is why many street racers use E85.

It's not a 'gimmick', some people just don't understand it.
