Because each and every chocolate covered cherry commercially prepared had one major flaw, the thing inside was only called a "cherry" because at one time IT USED TO BE!!

My wife's friend found some dark liquid spilled in a long streak going down the road by her house recently. She thought it was paving material except it was brownish. She stuck her finger in it and sniffed it. It was chocolate. Ha ha. The manager of her apartment building did the same thing and came up with the same conclusion. They have no idea how gallons of chocolate ended up on the road but my suggestion is that they be on the lookout for some goofy looking, orange dudes driving a 1971 Wonkamobile.
My guess is that real cherries and maraschino cherries contain too much water to cover with chocolate. I'd use the cherries used in fruitcakes instead..
