That may not be too far out of line, though it is hard to see the size
of the cakes. My fruit cake recipe gives me 4 loaf size pans. I cut
each of those cakes in half. Between the pound of butter, the the eggs,
11-12 cups of glazed fruit, a lemon, sour cream, flour, sugar, vanilla,
there is close to $40 in ingredients, about $10 per loaf pan sized cake.
The cakes in the photos look to be about twice that size. Then there is
the labour and other overheat. That $50 cake may not be too far out of
line.
I also like the dark fruitcake, but do not make it. Last year I bout
a chunk of it from my baker. IRCC is was $12 for a piece that would be
about 6x4x4. It was delicious. Buying piece instead of making and
eating a batch saved me a lot of money and calories.
