The only part of Cracker Jacks I liked was the peanuts. I make my own
caramel corn with Spanish peanuts in it. It does not last long. So yummy!
When I was a kid, we got boxes of candy with toys inside. The candy was
dreadful. I think it was some kind of taffy wrapped in waxed paper. My mom
liked the candy. The prize was usually a very tiny, clear glass marble.
Usually green but I did get a couple of blue ones. Once in a while I'd get a
ring. This may have been something local to Wichita. There was nothing like
that here.
We did get Japanese rice paper candy that came with a prize. I remember
people laughing at us because my dad thought the rice paper needed to be
peeled off. He was not convinced that it was edible so he told the guy
laughing at him to eat one and then he sat there stunned when the guy ate
the whole thing.
The prizes used to be good. But in this country they feared that kids would
try to eat the prize. Which is why now they are usually just silly paper
things.
I also remember choosing my cereal based on the prize. I went without
breakfast quite often because I couldn't bring myself to eat the Honeycomb.
I just wanted the prizes.
