They can be a pretty good deal for people who want to try a variety of
different foods. From my experience, the places withe highest numbers of
morbidly obese clientele are the very cheapest foods, mostly deep fried.
I went to one of those after a tournament a couple years ago. I have
never been back because I don't eat a lot of battered and deep fried
foods, but there were a lot of very large people, who were piling their
plates high with that high fat food.
In southern Ontario there is a chain of Chinese all you can eat buffets
called Mandarin. While they have the usual deep fried stuff like egg
rolls, spring rolls, chicken balls, wontons etc., they also have a wide
variety of healthier choices. Last summer we took some Australian
visitors to the one in Niagara Falls. They have been on a number of
tours of the US and Canada and had been crisscrossing the continent for
almost two months. They loved the Mandarin because they were so many
fresh vegetables and fruits. The tour food had apparently been really
lacking in that sort of stuff.
They are good places for families and large groups because they provide
a wide enough range of appetizers, main courses and desserts to please
just about everyone. Sure, there are some plus size people there, but
not like the cheap places with the garbage food.
