That was typical modern American cooking back in the old days. They liked to cook with pre-made sauces and mixes. They'd throw in a can of pineapple and call it "Hawaiian." The only time I cooked with a can of pineapple was to make pineapple upside-down cake. Maybe that should be called Hawaiian upside-down cake. That would suit me just fine.
