I just get a $100-$150 Samsung tracfone smart phone
and I'll use it until the battery dies and replace it.
I add minutes or data as I need it.

If you don't really intend to use it a lot, something like it
might suit you. In my (limited) experience, I worry less about
the battery dying than the OS version becoming out of date and
unsupported by apps.
