My cousin, then a resident in San Francisco, was told to come back in
a month and he (her doctor) would recheck the lump she found in her
breast and see if it developed. She was so freaked she flew back to
the UK, saw her doc there and within a week had a mastectomy.
When back in SF she asked him why he had suggested waiting and he said
that was what the insurance company wanted. She said she preferred
major decisions be made by a qualified doctor, not an insurance clerk!
