Yes it is the pack mentality. I had a Belgian Shepherd who used to leave
parts of rabbit on the steps of the house. It finally got to the point
where she'd just leave the rabbits foot.

The most amazing site was watching her thrust her jaws through the
kennel door (The spaces were about 4" to 5" wide.) and snatch a rabbit
that was frolicking just outside the kennel door.

I miss that dog though. She was extremely protective of both our home
and me.
