Plenty of shoppers just grab and never look, I see it all the time,
especially in the produce department, they don't check best used by
dates either. It's very easy to check if a jar has been opened by
looking at the vacuum dimple on the lid... if it's raised and you can
press it down and it pops back up the jar has been opened.... I
automatically check jar lids at the store... it's very rare but when I
find one that's been opened I bring it up to the customer service
desk. Many jars also have a tamper proof plastic seal, if it's
missing then don't buy it. I carefully check every item I buy, for
tampering and for condition, I don't buy dented cans. I don't buy
meats from the case either because it could have been left on a shelf
somewhere in the store and returned. I ask the butcher to cut a fresh
piece that's larger than what's displayed, I've never been refused. I
don't care if it's larger than what I want, I can always cut a roast
in half at home... I may grind part or cut it into stew meat... but
what's important is I know it was freshly cut and hasn't been left
unrefrigerated. It's good for empoyees in the meat department to know
that you're a regular customer, then you get better cuts.
