In 19th century England ginwas a cheap booze for poor people who wanted a way to escape the agony oflife. It became fashionable sometime later. Lot's of poor people stuffbecame popular; lobster, oysters and now even beef skirt is as costly asprime rib and I used to get it almost free because meat markets couldn'tsell it.
