Small spikes can degrade but not necessarily make It worthless. Been
disconnecting many old ones that are at least 15 years old. They can cause
fires. Some protection. Evidently, newer models have a type of fuse next to
the MOV to disconnect before damage. I have to inspect a few really nice
ones I bought long ago to see how they are constructed. I also disconnected
a type of whole house protector at the breaker box, after reading about
them causing fires.
