There is a vaguely supported but firmly held belief that "the natives
cannot handle their liquor." This generally coincides with the natives
living in misery and despair.

When I looked this up last night, I ran across an interesting page
describing how the aborigines used to make all sorts of low alcohol
drinks before the white man came.
