I believe you've got it backwards from what most people do. If my
husband told me he couldn't find his keys I would do what (I think) is
the thoughtful thing to do and get off my butt to help him look. I
wouldn't dream of giving him some smart ass comment while I continued to
sit.

I don't think my husband (or most other people) would ever make that
kind of statement ("I can't find my keys") and *expect* anyone within
ear shot to get up and help. Helping is just the thoughtful thing to
do, at least in my world.
