When I was a kid, we always called before we went to someone's house.
Exception being the few houses on our little cul de sac but we pretty much
knew what hour each family ate dinner at. And if we did drop by then it was
for something brief or perhaps to borrow something to complete our own
dinner.

Odd thing is, we had two stores within walking distance and yet people still
borrowed food. I don't think anyone has ever borrowed food from me as an
adult except for the one time the mom next door ran out of milk. I think in
that case everyone was sick.
