Why is that? Have you never eaten any...even as a kid? I've always liked
them. As I said I'd rather have one cooked from a stick over a bonfire,
but I really enjoy the ones Costco sells. They are more like
frankfurters though, than just a regular hot dog.

Yes, I've had plenty. I grew up in a town that had lots of German
meat markets. We had real frankfurters, ring bologna, bratwurst,
summer sausage, etc. They all had a pleasant texture and were
variously seasoned. Hot dogs are really a smooth paste. I had Ball
Park frank for the first time a week or so ago and it was sweet!
Honestly, what's with that? I agree that the Costco dogs are at the
top of the scale. As a kid, it was probably a shooting offense if you
had hot dogs at a gathering. We had brats and burgers, with real
baked buns (lots of German bakeries) made especially for the brats and
burgers -- none of that sweet, soft bready stuff. To this day I can't
eat a burger on one of the soft hamburger buns. It has to be
Kaiser-or Semmel like.

I'm with you. non-kosher for me , thanks. Nathans and hebrew Naitonal are both way greasy for me. I like a pork beef mix with some seasoning in a natural casing. Either simmered, grilled or over the bonfire; I love it if the dogs good. Local butcher shops tend to dominat this realm of food. This is also true of the other delicacies you mentioned. My local guy makes a better dog than any of those national crappers.
+1 on the bun, too. Have a great sausage ona sawdust bun. Blah! Chew in the bun, snap in the sausage, baby.
