What you need is a cheese plane It cuts uniform slices across a slab of
cheddar (or swiss or monterey jack). Works great for grilled cheese
sandwiches and for slicing cheese for burgers.

Nothing says you can't use more robust breads to make a grilled cheese
sandwich. I sometimes use artisan loaves of Italian from the grocery store
bakery. Or use rye bread.

Um... a salamander isn't a hand tool. It's an oven/broiler often used in
restaurants. You know this! Sure, you can buy home models. But if you
don't have room for a toaster oven you definitely won't have room for a
salamander.
