i love the costco frozen french onion soup

i hold the plastic and cut it close to the frozen bit, allow it to drop
into the casserole dish, then nuke it

i've never had to hold the frozen bit for any length of time other than
to grab it from the freezer, because i'm hurrying, and perhaps again
when i place the onion soup 'right side up' in the casserole dish (it
has cheese on the top of it)
