With your freezer emptied simply unplug it and leave the door open...
there is really no reason to speed up the defrosting process, not
unless your life is so barren that you have nothing more interesting
to occupy yourself. If you really, really gotta watch ice melt fix
yerself a gin n' tonic.

A garage is never a good choice for a refrigerator/freezer...
household units are designed to operate within normal living
temperatures.... any extremes will damage/shorten its life.
