You are not stupid. The definition of "cider" is mote. In the US, cider is
generally defined as simple apple juice. Hard cider is fermented apple
juice, usually 5-7%. Then you can make a true wine with apples. In much of
the rest of the world, apple juice is apple juice and cider is the fermented
version that the US calls hard cider.

I hope that is all clear now. ;o\

That said Hard cider is a delightful drink on hot days in the summer. Dry
apple wine make a nice, non-descript, white table wine. Sweeten it a bit
and it is distinctly apple flavored wine.
